The Sognefjord is very deep: between Vangsnes and Balestrand the sea chart shows a depth of 1093 meters. The fjord was formed by glaciers working their way towards the open sea. The landscape along it changes dramatically from the majestetic mountains of Jotunheimen with its 2000 meters steep mountains, to the Fjords mouth on the coast of Norway. Where the Sognefjord goes out into the North sea the Fjord is only 150 – 200 meters deep.

The Golfstream makes the climate alongside the fjord very special. Although the fjord is far north, is it rarely cold in winter and no ice on the water. This makes good conditions for growing fruit and berries. |
